Little Trip Down Memory Lane (aka the most ridiculous ‘B’ post in the A to Z challenge)

Thank god for ‘B’ day. It gives me an opportunity to ask some questions about something.

Remember that childhood delicacy? Where did it go? When I was a kid everyone ate bologna. If my old friend, Robin, were reading this blog, he’d remember. He had a bologna and cheese sandwich in his lunch every day in grade 9. Every day. It makes sense to me now. Robin must have been a fussy eater. Aside from bologna, I bet he would not eat sandwiches.

There was bologna in our house at all times when I was a kid. And bologna wasn’t just delicious on the tastebuds, it was also a lot of fun to eat. My brothers and I used to bite a face into it and wear it as a mask for a while before we ate it. Never a dull moment in our house when our mother broke out the bologna.

I’ll leave you with this little ditty. Let me know if it conjures up any good bologna memories. :)

  1. Ha – love it! And so true – where the hell did bologna go? I am totally getting some next time I’m at the deli! I may not wear it as a face before I eat it – but I’m getting some!

Thanks for the memories : )

  2. Bologna (which absolutely no one pronounces ba-loan-ya) was a staple in our household as well. And it appears as if bologna face sculptures were more common than I had originally thought.

  3. Bologna face sculptures! lol! See Babs – you really need to try it! Thank god I have 3 comments on this post. It was so late when I was writing it, feeling all the pressure from the a to z challenge, I pressed “publish” and cringed a little on the inside. But alas, it seems I’m not the only one with fond memories of a bologna- filled childhood!

  4. We ate bologna a fair amount, getting cold meat from Ziggy’s deli was the upgrade and a special treat on hot summer nights when my Mom didn’t want to cook. As a way of breaking up the monotony we would occasionally have the Macaroni loaf (the bolgna with the chees and macaroni in it, I realize now as an adult that it is a cheap imitation of Mortadella). I don’t specifically remember making face in the bologna but we had a rule with Alpha getti that you had to spell your name before you could eat.
My kids like bologna sometimes, but I’m suprised by the things that I liked that they don’t; weiners in cresent rolls, hamburger helper, beef stroganoff, our parents fed us some crap for sure.
I think bolgna disappeared because parents don’t want all the preservatives, but I say that is what makes us such a strong generation, we may die but we don’t decompose It’s the Nitrates!

    • We were never so lucky as to have the macaroni loaf. Perhaps when I’m next out at No Frills (they’d CERTAINLY have bologna there!) I’ll look for that variety and have a taste!

  5. I’m going to be singing that all day! I do remember bologna. We used to make fried bologna sandwiches, which I actually feel like I could stomach again, but won’t. The more I learn about food, the less I want to eat. Except chocolate…and bread of course. Glad you’re A-Zing!

    • That tune has a habit of sticking in the brain doesn’t it? It appears Larri’s husband (see comment below) still enjoys himself some fried bologna! I never tried that but maybe when Babs picks some up this weekend I’ll tell her to give it a test run! Thanks for the comment! A-Zing is great so far – I just need to carve out some time tonight to check out more blogs!

  6. Have some Bologna is my fridge right now! My kids love it. My husband eats fried bologna, some sort of Southern delicacy. ;) These days, I purchase it at the deli. Can’t beat the price. Great ‘B’ post. Happy Tuesday! :)

    • Thanks Larri! Your husband must be an interesting man. Does he also bite a face out of the bologna first? Tell him to try it, I think he’ll enjoy it! Although with his preference being the fried variety he best be letting it cool down first! Glad to hear bologna is alive and well! Teach your kids the song!! Thanks for the comment. I will be perusing your blog later tonight! :)

  7. Most ridiculous post in the challenge? Haha, no. It was funny. And true. I used to ask for bologna, miracle whip and “square” cheese sandwiches as a kid. Now, the thought of eating any of those makes me gag. I guess we all go a little more gourmet as we grow up.

I’m in the A to Z challenge too. Feel free to visit if you’d like. Thanks for the laugh.

    • Glad you enjoyed Lisa! I will jump over now to visit your blog and then it’s on to letter ‘d’ for me! Hard to believe how many memories bologna conjures up! Thanks for the comment!
